A – Transient Resident (Tourist)
You may drive in Chile as long as your tourist status is valid, with:
1. Driver’s license from your country of origin, displaying the following documents:
- Passport or identification document with which you entered the country.
- Valid TUM (Single Migratory Card).
- Valid driver’s license from the country of origin.
2. International driving license.The international driving license allows you to drive for a period of 1 year in those countries where there is no bilateral agreement, such as Spain, Argentina, and Bolivia.
B – Temporary or Permanent Residence
If you already have a residence permit, you can:
- Obtain the Chilean driver’s license, or
- Request the exchange or recognition of a foreign license.
Obtain the Chilean driver’s license:
- Valid national identity card.
- Certificate of studies equivalent to the 8th year of Chilean basic education or the certificate issued by MINEDUC corresponding to the recognition of studies.
- Certificate of residence.
Request the exchange or recognition of a foreign license.
To request the exchange or recognition of a foreign license, this process is intended for nationals of Spain, South Korea, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Japan, and Paraguay who have a valid driver’s license from their countries of origin.
Important: When exchanging or recognizing your license, you must surrender your driver’s license from the country of origin, except for Colombian and Japanese nationals.
